Kashima-jingu Shrine is a historic shrine that is believed to have been established in 660BC (the first year of Emperor Jimmu) and dedicated to Takemikazuchi-no-Okami, one of the deities of martial arts who founded the country of Japan.
The current Shaden (main building) of the shrine was donated by the second shogun of the Tokugawa Clan, Hidetada, the Okunomiya (rear shrine) by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and the Romon (gate) by Tokugawa Yorifusa, the first head of the Mito Domain. They have all been designated as important cultural properties.
If you proceed along Okusando (the approach to Okunomiya) to see Okunomiya (rear shrine), you will be able to see Shikaen (deer garden), Kaname Ishi (keystone), and Mitarai Ike (purification pond).
